Peace drifted on the winds and whispered in the swift deep waters of the Gallatin River. Hope drank in the beauty of the land sparse with trees but rich in wild beauty. The boys played with their bright green plastic fishing poles that sported no dangerous hooks, Matthew guided the boat by oar, and they drifted in the swift current. She slipped the camera out of her bag.

For the fun of it, she snapped shots of the boys and of Matthew, who merely shook his head at her, a dimple revealed in his left cheek.

“Don’t you city girls know how to play?”

“I’m here, right?” How did she admit work was the only thing she had in her life, besides God? No one was waiting for her at home, no one missed her when she left town, and there was no one to hold close through the long nights. “This is my idea of fun. I know, amazing but true.”

“Nora ordered me to make sure you relaxed.”

“I am relaxed.” She tilted her face to the sunlight and drank in the feeling of sun and wind and freedom against her skin.

“I’ve been hearing tales about you.”

That drew her attention. Hope twisted around and settled into the curve of the bow. “Out with it. I want to know what you’ve heard.”

“Afraid, huh?” He dipped the tip of one oar into the water and eased them along with the current. “I’ve heard a few things, actually. It seems quite a few people noticed the two of us together at the Sunshine Café for brunch after church that day. I’ve been asked by about four or five people just exactly what’s going on between the two of us.”

“Oh, as if we were there alone together instead of with our families.”

“Exactly. From the sound of it, you’d think the two of us were having a romantic tryst.” There was no sadness in his eyes as he met her gaze. “Don’t worry, that particular rumor will die down. But there’s another rumor I do believe that’s being spread around this town and it’s about you.”

“I’m in trouble now.”

“Yep, everyone’s saying how hard you work taking care of Nora. Even Harold mentioned it to me. He said you’d taken over all the housework and cooking, besides helping the nurses day and night.”

“Nanna’s doing better, that’s all that matters.”

“You’ll rest later, is that it?”

She felt her stomach tighten and begin to burn. “Nanna is all the family I have. Or at least it seems that way.”

“What about your brother?”

“Oh, he’s so busy making money in New York that he doesn’t have two seconds of spare time. And either of my parents—” Her stomach felt on fire. “They wouldn’t come here. When they heard about Nanna’s fall, Mom offered to pay for a nursing home. A nursing home!”

Anger licked through her, and she knew it showed. “Nanna has always been there for me. She took me in when I was lost and alone that horrible year my parents were divorcing, and hers was the first real love I’d known.
